Direct Primary Care Explained
How DPC memberships work and why they are not a full insurance replacement.
What you get with DPC
Direct Primary Care is a membership model for primary care: longer visits, direct messaging, and often same-week access for a monthly fee paid to the clinic.
DPC is not insurance. It does not cover hospitalization, specialists, imaging at hospitals, or most surgeries. Members typically pair DPC with an HDHP, health sharing, or other major-medical coverage.
Who it fits
DPC can be excellent for people who want a strong primary-care relationship and are tired of rushed visits. It is a poor standalone choice for anyone who needs comprehensive financial protection.
Compare total cost: DPC membership plus a catastrophic or HDHP backstop versus a conventional plan with primary-care copays.
Frequently asked questions
- Is DPC the same as concierge medicine?
- Related idea, different billing. DPC usually replaces insurance billing for primary care with a flat membership; concierge models vary.
- Can I use an HSA with DPC?
- HSA rules are specific — some DPC fees may not be HSA-eligible. Confirm current IRS guidance and your HDHP status.
