Short-Term Plans vs ACA Coverage
Why short-term plans look cheap — and when the gaps become expensive.
What short-term plans skip
Short-term plans can exclude pre-existing conditions, skip essential benefits, and impose dollar caps. They are not subsidy-eligible and are not ACA-compliant major medical.
They exist for brief, healthy coverage gaps — not as a long-term substitute for comprehensive insurance.
When ACA is the safer default
If you have an ongoing condition, expect care, or qualify for subsidies, an ACA Marketplace plan is usually far safer. Subsidies can make the comprehensive plan cheaper monthly than an unsubsidized short-term premium suggests.
State rules also limit how long short-term plans may last. Read duration and exclusion language carefully.
